Angiography

Angiography is the x-ray study of the blood vessels. Angiography requires the injection of a contrast dye that makes the blood vessels visible to x ray. The dye is injected through a procedure known as arterial puncture. The puncture is usually made in the groin area, armpit or inside elbow. Once a guide wire has been put in place, a fluoroscopy screen displays a view of the patient's vascular system. A contrast dye is then administered and x-ray pictures and/or fluoroscopy pictures (or moving x rays) will be taken as the dye will dissipate through the patient's system. Some types of angiography include cerebral angiography, coronary angiography, pulmonary angiography and kidney angiography.
