Contrast agents are used often in diagnostic imaging, they may be given orally, intravenously or in some situations rectally. Contrast enhances or highlights vessels and other important anatomy being scanned.
In the past twenty years the agent formulation has vastly improved however, as with any substance there is a very low risk that you may be allergic to the agent being used. It is important that you communicate any allergy history or reactions that you have with your physician.
Prior to your exam a technologist will ask you about any prior difficulty you may have had with allergies.
The following health conditions have been identified as increasing your risk:
- A prior history of contract reaction
- Asthma
- Severe allergies
- Sickle cell anemia
- Multiple myeloma
- Renal insufficiency
- Diabetes
Contrast reactions range from mild:
- Nausea
- Metallic Taste
To more severe:
- Respiratory difficulty
- Cardiac complication
Patients who have a history of complications may be pre-treated for reaction prior to their treatment.
